Anne Hathaway reveals she had a miscarriage in 2015

Anne Hathaway revealed she had a miscarriage before welcoming two sons with her husband, Adam Shulman.

The “Princess Diaries” star got candid about her fertility journey during an interview with Vanity Fair published Monday, revealing her loss occurred in 2015 amid her Off-Broadway play “Grounded.“

“The first time it didn’t work out for me,” she explained. “I was doing a play and I had to give birth onstage every night.”

Hathaway, 41, said she opened up about the miscarriage to a group of her friends, who came to visit her backstage after one of her shows.

“It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine,” she continued. “I had to keep it real otherwise.”

Reflecting on getting pregnant with her first son, the “Les Misérables” star seemingly hinted that she became empathetic toward others who struggled with fertility.

“So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you,” she added.

Shortly after the miscarriage, Hathaway and Shulman — who tied the knot in September 2012 — welcomed their first son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, now 8, on March 24, 2016.

At the time, sources told E! News that the notoriously private couple were “ecstatic to be parents.”

Three years later, the “Interstellar” star and the movie producer revealed they were expecting their second child together in a snap posted to Instagram.

Showing off her baby bump in a mirror selfie, the actress wrote, “It’s not for a movie…⁣⁣#2.”

To avoid feeling “disingenuous” to those who experience fertility obstacles, she added, “All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love 💕.”

Hathaway kept the birth of her second son under wraps, later revealing they welcomed, Jack, now 4, toward the end of 2019.

She subtly announced his arrival while gushing about how she was pregnant with him while filming her 2020 film “The Witches.”

“I have a beautiful almost-11-month-old boy,” she said during a “Live With Kelly and Ryan” appearance in October 2020. “I was pregnant when I made ‘The Witches,’ so technically he’s all over that performance.”
